In a move that has caused consternation among UK shoppers, Amazon has announced plans to begin selling products in its UK market.
The move follows Amazon’s announcement in January that it would start selling in the UK.
The UK has been a major export market for the internet giant since the launch of its first UK online store in 2012.
The company, which has over 4,000 stores in the country, has been able to expand in the years since.
But with Amazon’s UK plans set to open up, shoppers are taking to social media to question why they should have to pay extra to visit the UK market after the country has been known for its “borders”.
“Why should Amazon pay to visit your country?
Why would you want to be here?” asked one user on Facebook.
The decision to launch in the United Kingdom comes as the British government faces an unprecedented wave of protest against the government’s plans to introduce a borderless online shopping regime in 2020.
Prime Minister David Cameron has been criticised for his stance towards the online shopping market.
He has said that the government is only interested in getting rid of barriers to online shopping, which include the UK’s border and its strict regulations.
“Our aim is to open the UK up to more international and online shopping,” he said in January.
“I’m not worried about it, it’s not a barrier.
The border is only a barrier.”
Amazon said it would open a UK store in the city of Birmingham in 2019, but has yet to announce a UK location.
The internet retailer has been targeting customers in the cities of London, Manchester and Glasgow, as well as its UK regional centres in Bristol, Liverpool and Leeds.
